Why a Zine?
Let's start at the beginning, with Let's Create, my annual Facebook group competition. It was the Eden of my thinking about making a zine myself, and though engagement never quite took off, my thirst for creating a zine never faded, going all the way back to VIBE magazine at college in 1995. Now, that thirst has led to the CREATE zine, currently being reset into a square format so Vol 1 through Vol 4 all sit together as one collection. And it doesn't stop there: I'm setting myself up for a quarterly project to build CREATE into a wider publication, featuring other photographers, podcast and YouTube stories, and much more. Full circle, from college and uni, through Let's Create, to now.
Open Wide π
This week's Field Notes explores wide vista landscape photography, including scenes shot across Scotland, ahead of the release of CREATE Vol 3. A look at the memories behind each frame, and why a landscape photography zine or print still connects us to a moment more than a screen ever can.
Beard Stroking
Chasing early heather on the hills with friends β a midweek photography walk full of wind, light, laughter, and cake. Read the story and see the shots.
Finding Meaning
This week marks the first of my Summer Streets workshops in Liverpool, wonderful, diverse and glorious Liverpool. Alongside it, I'm sharing photographs from Liverpool and Cornwall, and reflecting on why my street photography is starting to search for something more than aesthetics, a sense of meaning, commentary and connection to the places I shoot.
Too Much Sun?
I head to the Royal Forest of Dean expecting mist and magic conditions, only to be met with harsh, cloudless sunlight. Rather than giving up, I explored how to work with unforgiving light using contrast management, backlighting, and polarising filters to turn a "bad light" day into a masterclass in deliberate composition and metering.
Longer than usual
The illusion of minimalism is hard to achieve, it feels like magic. This series was shot on the Wirral, chasing tide times, quiet light and the kind of solitude that slows the heart rate right down. Long exposure photography, done properly, is as much about the edit as the moment you press the shutter.
Morning Peace
This place is filled with memories. Some deeply sad, some incredibly spiritual, plenty of teenage laughs, and now a muse for my photography. Alarm set for 3:30am, camera in hand, I chased a James Herbert style fog through Johnny's Wood to reach the beech trees before the world woke up. What I found there was more than a photograph...
I Dream Of Steam!
My time at the Dene Rally The Photowalk meetup in Hampshire. A weekend with lovely people, lots of photography, a podcast, blog post and video.
A Day With Trees
Join me for this weeks Field Notes, A Day In A Life series of images taken at my local woodland in Infrared. Bright sunny days and my favourite trees, a moments of soulful pleasure.
