The end of autumn
Photo of the week 21.11.24
A series of photographs below from my latest video / project the end of Autumn.
I’ve decided to dedicate this week to working intently on a video project that I only shot a couple of weeks ago, which includes a large collection of captivating Autuminal images that I gathered during my idyllic woodland walks. Not that I ever try to stick rigidly to a specific topic, but I’m genuinely very excited to begin the editing process for the photos and seamlessly wrap it all up with a well-crafted video (Well that’s the idea HAHA). The photograph of the week isn’t conventional nor is it strictly adhering to the rules of traditional photography, but it was the way it made me feel that truly stands out. When you eventually see the video, it will give you a deeper understanding of how I felt and how I reacted to this moment of pure visual delight. I have to chuckle at the memory, but it genuinely was a moment filled with connection and excitement; nature certainly has a remarkable way of inspiring me in such a profound manner. So, how do I start to effectively compose and create the Photograph of the Week in a way that encapsulates this experience?
I just want to say and recognise that yes this isn’t the greatest photograph, big in drama or awe. This image is mine, personal, this came from as I said above the connection in the moment.
So why this grouping? Why this scene?
As you will see below, there are a few images from that inspiring day, and these are just a small selection of what I captured. This particular scene captured my full attention due to the striking Larch positioned prominently in the center of the composition, illuminated beautifully by the natural light. The way it stood out, contained within a backdrop of towering pines alongside the vibrant, changing colors of the surrounding Oak trees, created a mesmerizing sight. It’s a wonderfully diverse area with various species growing in harmony, yet the entire stage was set with the Larch as the star.
I chose a letterbox aspect ratio of approximately 16:9 to minimize distractions and to focus entirely on what I perceived at that moment. Handheld, I shifted left to right, carefully arranging the frame in the hopes of capturing on the sensor precisely what I was seeing and feeling in that very moment. The scene is essentially about how I interpreted it as a narrative; the gathering and enclosing of the other trees on either side serve to protect the Larch, as if they are reaching out toward it. It feels like a gentle hand guiding this magnificent autumnal tree to step onto the stage and greet its audience. And tonight, Matthew, I am The Larch! 🤣 It feels like it’s performing on stage for the very first time… Hopefully you understand where I’m coming from. Creating these stories, which often draw inspiration from films or modern cultural icons, brings me immense joy and often makes me smile. I envision the woods as a grand stage or a bustling street scene filled with characters gathering for the performance of the season. In this instance, it’s the grand finale known as The End Of Autumn.
